Hand-Crafted Aperture Wood Desk Box
Back in in 2017 and 2018, we got together with George, a retired master wood craftsman, to design and make the 35mm Wood Camera and the TLR Wood Camera.
In 2020, despite the pandemic, we tried once again to create something unique. So we sat down with George for a few weeks (masked up side-by-side in his garage workshop), and designed and made these limited-edition hand-crafted Wood Aperture Desk Boxes.
Once again, only 10 of these beauties have been made in total.
Crafted entirely by hand in Philadelphia, these gorgeous heirloom-quality Desk Boxes (some people also call them Keepsake Boxes) are the ultimate gift for the photography connoisseur who thinks they've seen it all. They can be used to store rolls of film, memory cards, a small lens, or whatever else you like. Each Box will hold up to 8 rolls of 35mm film.
Several hours of work went into making each box, with each piece of wood sanded, joined and finished by hand. The lid with the aperture pattern was particularly challenging, as the aperture blades had to be precisely cut and manually sanded until they fit perfectly with the contrasting center.
Each Wood Desk Box is made of 4 or 5 different types of wood from around the world,and comes with a unique edition number and storycard describing the types of wood used and how to properly care for this heirloom-quality gift.
The final product includes some wood types that are rare and distinct, that were specially selected for their superior beauty and grain.
Purpleheart / Wenge Box (3 Made):
The lid is a Purpleheart center with Wenge aperture blades.
The body is composed of a layer of Wenge in between 2 layers of Purpleheart, with a Wenge bottom panel.
Oak / Black Walnut Box (3 Made):
The lid is a Mahogany center with Oak aperture blades.
The body is a Black Walnut middle layer and bottom panel, with Oak on the top and the lower layers.
Ash / Black Walnut Box (2 Made):
The lid is an Oak center with Mahogany aperture blades.
The body is a Black Walnut middle layer and bottom panel, with Ash on the top and lower layers.
